1825           Army officers touring the jungles of upper                   Assam found  Petroleum oil exuding from                   the river.     

1866           First oil well drilled at a depth of 102 ft,                   proved dry.

1882           Assam Railways & Trading Co. (AR&T Co)                   came across oil seepage at Digboi.        

1889           First commercial well struck in Digboi at a                   depth of 662 ft.

1893           AR&T Co installed a tiny refinery at                   Margherita.

1899           Assam oil Company formed.

1901           Capacity of 500 barrels (20,000 gallons)                   per day

YEAR                                EVENT

1902         Assam Oil company (AOC) began marketing                kerosene oil in the North-East.              

1921         Burmah Oil company (BOC) took over                control of AOC Operations of Digboi Oil field                and refinery.             

1922         Digboi Refinery completely rebuilt and                capacity expanded by BOC, the new owner                manager of AOC.

1928-40    Crude units, Coker, KTU, Wax units,Boilers,                Powerhouses added.
                

1966         AOC took over marketing from BOC, Brand                name "Assam Oil"
                 

1981        Government of India took over AOC/BOC's                interest in India and merged AOC with                Indian Oil Corporation, by an Act of                Parliament, but rtained as a Division                (Assam Oil Division)with integrated refining                and marketing operations.

2001         VRSD pilot plant commissioned.
